Expanding the monitoring and observation capacities in the Arctic Ocean

 

Objectives:

The main objectives of Work Package 6 are to use the increase in marine traffic in the Arctic to 1) implement a “programme of ships and platforms of opportunity” in the Arctic Ocean and 2) to identify key technologies that could lead to an improvement of ship-based and autonomous measurements in ice-covered seas.

In the Programme of ships and platforms of opportunity, commercial vessels, such as merchant ships, tourism ships, fishing vessels, but also offshore platforms, could serve to host or deploy instruments for environmental data collection and thus provide a huge possibility to increase the observational capabilities in the Arctic.

Work Package 6 is led by Finnish Meteorological Institut (FMI).
